Outline

The increase in immigrants and refugees due to war, civil strife, oppression, economic disparity, and climate change has caused a global crisis. This 10-day program brings together undergraduate students from UTokyo and AUW to explore ways to build a society in which people of diverse backgrounds—including immigrants and refugees—live together peacefully. The program offers opportunities for students to spend time together, learning about and discussing what it means to live and grow as/with immigrants and refugees, as well as the challenges involved. Students will actively engage in the lectures, discussions, and off-campus field trips that explore such topics as:

 - Immigrants and Refugees in/to/from Asia and Japan: Backgrounds, Structures, and Challenges
 - Immigrants and Refugees in Schools and Universities: Acceptance and Coexistence in the Field of Education
 - Family, Religion, and Community: Inheritance and Transformation of Immigrant and Refugee Identities
 - Culture and Media: Representations and Discourses surrounding/by Immigrants and Refugees

UTokyo students will attend classes on society, economy, language(s), and culture(s) of Bangladesh during the program while AUW students take Japanese language classes. As the end of the program, students will share their learning outcomes at a symposium which will be open to attendees from both within and outside the university.

In addition to lectures and discussions, the program also offers a one-day excursion around Tokyo, participation in cultural events, and a meeting with senior executives and staff members of Fast Retailing Foundation as well as a workshop at the Foundation. Students also have opportunities to explore the city, visit cultural sites, and share meals together in their free time.

Applications from undergraduate students of all academic years and disciplines are warmly welcomed!
